| Mokume Gane With Pinata Inks | ||
You'll need translucent clay, leafing foil and inks in the colors of your choice, a rubber stamp, a tile to use as an inking plate and a sharp blade. |
Roll out the clay as thin as you can and back it with the foil. The sheets shown here are the width of a pasta machine. |
Stamp the clay surfaces at random. Let the ink dry, stack the stamped sheets, cut in half and stack again. |
Press out any air bubbles, then cut the stack in quarters. |
Compress the stack. Press it to thin it out. The ink stretches with the clay. |
Thin and stretch the stack laterally to make the foil crackle. Cut in quarters, again. |
Stack up the four pieces and compress the stack to thin it once more. |
Distress the stack - I like to use a credit card to make a grid pattern. |
Square up the flattened stack to make a tall cube. |
Press the top to flatten it if you like. |
Shave very thin slices off the top of the stack and apply to bead bases or a sheet of clay. |
The resulting sheet can be applied to pens or flat surfaces. |
